A Takeout Tuesday

Wow, thank you so much for the feedback on my post about the "Christmas Issue." To be honest, I was most worried about what my family would have to say about the reason why I don’t like Christmas. Moments after hitting "publish," my mother called and told me my feelings were 100% validated. It has indeed been a rough road, but we both agreed that we are better people now because of it. We were living in La-La Land before. Sounds nice, but really, it’s no way to live your life.

Also after blogging yesterday, I went to BodyFlow, the yoga class at my gym. It was aaawwesome. My favourite instructor was there, which I find is even more important with yoga. This particular release is being described as very “athletic” and I would have to agree. I worked up a good little sweat! Lots of lunges to downward dogs and back. Which is actually a really awkward movement for me because of my freakishly long legs.

Moving on to this morning’s gym visit! I was up hours before the crack of dawn for some weight lifting and HIIT.

Warm-up:
15 minutes on the elliptical (center-driven), increasing resistance every 2 minutes

A1 – One-arm dumbbell snatch:
3 sets @ 20 lbs x 8

B1 – Step-up:
3 sets @ 40 lbs x 8

B2 – Bent-over dumbbell row:
3 sets @ 40 lbs x 8

C1 – Single-leg squat:
3 sets @ 10 lbs x 8 (someday I’ll get to a pistol squat!)

C2 – Wide-grip lat pulldown:
3 sets @ 50 lbs x 8

D1 – Plank:
1 set @ 2 minutes

HIIT:
15 minutes on elliptical, 1 minute sprints, 2 minutes recovery

*All weights are total amounts used

Typing this out, I again realize how much strength I’ve lost since finishing the New Rules of Lifting for Women program last spring. I’m down 20 lbs on the step-ups. I can even tell my arms have lost muscle. Albeit, they’ll always be small and spindly, that’s just how I’m made, but I want to get some of it back! Perhaps I’ll have to figure out some winter weight lifting goals :)

Oddly, I was again craving savoury oats after this workout. Same exact thing happened after my last weight lifting session last week.

100_9818

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 breakfast sausage (chopped and stirred into oats)
  • pinch salt
  • 1 soft fried egg
  • salsa

I did something really rare for lunch today. Nothing in my fridge or cupboards sounded appealing to prepare for work, so I decided to buy my lunch. Shocking, I know.

Except, I kinda cheated. I went to the grocery store.

Freezer aisle:

100_9820

Pre-weight loss days, it was quite common for me to have two Amy’s pocket sandwiches for lunch.

100_9821

It wasn’t as good as I remember. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Amy’s products in general.

These days, I’m going for a more “balanced” approach, so I just grabbed one pocket and hit up the prepared foods aisle.

100_9823

“Asian” salad. Don’t know what’s so “Asian” about it :P But I topped it with “Japanese” dressing, which was soy-sauce-y. It had mixed greens, carrots, mandarin, sliced almonds, chicken and mozzarella.

My hunger has been off the charts today, and I aaalmost stopped by Pita Pit on my way home. Until I realized my freezer (as always) is stocked to the brim with pita bread. So I made one at home instead.

100_9838

  • 1 can sardines in a tomato basil sauce
  • 1 laughing cow cheese wedge
  • red onion
  • mushrooms
  • tomatoes
  • bell pepper
  • romaine

With a honeycrisp doused in cinnamon.

100_9830

Take that Pita Pit.

Too bad I ate this at 4:45 pm. I might need another meal before bed! :P

I was toying with the idea of going to yoga again tonight, but I’ve been feeling really dizzy ever since my workout this morning. At first, I thought it was dehydration, but I’ve have tons of water and the room is still spinning. I’m not sure if my elevated hunger today has anything to do with it either. I kinda feel like my body is trying to tell me something, I just don’t know what! So I’m going to curl up and take it easy tonight. Last thing I need is the dreaded flu, which often starts as dizziness for me.

Question of the day: Where’s your favourite spot for takeout food? Pita Pit or the grocery store for me! (yes, I count the grocery store :P )

Home Cookin’

Hello blog friends! I am currently blogging from my mother’s living room. It’s fabulous. This guy is currently curled up next to me keeping my feet warm.

100_9586

Hi Archie!! What my mother doesn’t know is that I’m packing him up in the Focus and bringing him back with me tomorrow ;)

Would you believe it if I told you I got another 8 hours sleep last night? I know! Three nights in a row. That’s a record. I was awake after my usual 6 hours, but was actually able to fall back asleep when I tried to this time. Led to oversleeping, but I’ll take it! :D

Cool-down:
5 minutes stretching

Phew! I was going to tack on abs at the end, but this took me exactly one hour so I decided to call it a day.

Rushed back home and filled my hungry belly with a big bowl of savoury.

100_9567

Savoury oats! I was reeeally craving a bowl.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance
  • 1 breakfast sausage, sliced and stirred into oats
  • 1 fried egg
  • lotsa saaaahlsa

100_9570

Runny eggs are a thing of beauty, right Sophia? ;)

100_9575

I know I harass you guys about this every time, but you really gotta try savoury oats if you haven’t yet!! The protein, fat, and fibre in this dish always holds me over forever. Close to five hours today, which is almost unheard of for me!

My 90-minute drive home was rather boring. I arrived home and my mother popped this wonderful taco dip in the oven for me.

100_9577

It’s a mix of lean ground beef, black beans, kidney beans, homemade salsa and cheese.

While it was heating I prepared this:

100_9579

Which then turned into this:

100_9583

Hm. Looks gross there, but I know you’ll trust me when I say it was delicious ;)

Then I went searching for the Halloween stash. I knew it was somewhere! Found it hiding in the pantry closet.

100_9595

I went for the Reese’s pieces and savoured every little piece.

100_9585

I also arrived home to a house that smelled of turkey! My mom had one roasting in the oven all morning, and we were treated to it this evening.

100_9590

My mom forgot the cranberry sauce, so I put some plum sauce on it instead. We also had stir-fried veggies in a gravy made with soy sauce and mustard. It was delicious!!! And then I swiped a few french fries that were made for the kids.

And I maaaay have attacked the candy stash again for dessert.

100_9594

I like these little chocolate balls because I suck on them until they melt in my mouth. I actually suck on Reese’s pieces the same way too. Makes them last longer!

Now I’m just tucked in with my mom, Mark (her boyfriend, although that term is a little silly applied to their situation. Life partner? Common-law?) and the doggies. I’m just happy to be home and in their company. Tomorrow my mom and I are going to the gym together, then meeting my dad for lunch, visiting my Nana and then Costco!! Woot! See ya after!

Question of the day: What dishes does your mom always make? My mom is famous for her vegetarian chili. She also makes a mean hummus and vegepate :)

Sleeping Beauty

Hello friends! How is everyone doing? Are we all T-G-I-effing yet? I am, and I work at 5 am on Saturday and Sunday…

Loved hearing how you’ve been challenging yourselves! Now I feel inspired to go sign up for an expensive yoga studio :P

I challenged myself this morning by getting up at 5:30, whilst still dark out, to run a new distance record. Well, okay, it’s my weekly long run. The point is to run farther every week, but it’s nice to celebrate the small accomplishments :)

Thankfully, it also cooled off a little last night. I actually had the opportunity to fall into a deep sleep, so I felt well rested for the first time this week.

Fuelled up with half a giant banana, PB and iced coffee.

100_7000

On my messy end table. Oh hell, my whole apartment is messy.

The stats:

Distance: 6.34 miles (10.2 km!! Heck yes!!!)
Duration: 60:06
Avg Pace: 9:29 min/mi
Avg HR: No idea, it cut out on me after 40 min. It was the usual though – 165 ish, probably a max in the high 170s (that’s when I start huffing and puffing).

I upped my run/walk intervals to 8:1. A little harder, but still awesome. I’m planning on doing a 10k race on Sept. 20, so today’s run was very reassuring! I’m hoping to cut out my walking intervals just for that race.

My post-run meal was beyond satisfying – savoury oats.

100_7006

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • salt
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance
  • 1 breakfast sausage, chopped
  • 1 fried egg
  • salsa
  • mozzarella cheese

This was my first time cooking REAL sausage! A little greasier than I’m used to, and definitely not on the healthy side. But one breakfast sausage every now and then ain’t gonna kill me ;)

100_7008

Ohhh yesssss. Soft yolks in hot oatmeal is absolutely glorious.

I actually made dinner tonight! SO glad I did – it was delish!

100_7016

A “tofu salad sandwich.” I chopped up 1/4 block tofu and microwaved it for two minutes (raw tofu doesn’t agree with my belly). Then I mixed it up with 1 laughing cow cheese wedge and green onion. Put on toasted bread with spinach and tomato.

100_7014

This was soooo good! Using real, bakery bread helped. I’m officially off the “light” stuff. What’s the point in eating bread if it’s not the best possible kind? Real stuff fills me up more anyways :)

Since I’ve been having a rough time sleeping this week, I thought it would be fun to ask you guys what are your tips for getting a good night’s sleep?

One thing I did differently last night is that I slept in the opposite direction – with my head at the “foot” of the bed. This is a trick I’ve been doing ever since I was a kid. Whenever I have issues falling asleep, I just turn around. For whatever reason, changing up my position so drastically helps out.

I also never go to bed hungry. I always joke that my stomach doesn’t sleep while the rest of me does :P Seriously, if I go to bed with an empty stomach, I will be up at 4 am ready for a big meal.

Finally, I cut back on caffeine. This is what I do on the days before my early morning shifts. I either cut my caffeine consumption in half, or don’t drink coffee at all. It’s amazing the difference it makes! Not having a morning coffee can be the difference between me conking out at 8:30 pm or lying awake until 11 pm!

So share away! I’ll be sure to post the tips tomorrow :)
