Clearing the Air

I need to apologize to you guys. I really should have put a disclaimer on my last post. I’m sorry if you have an insatiable craving for waffles now! :P

So one thing I’ve noticed now that I work 8:30-4:30 Monday to Friday, is that my body starts to feel really run-down towards the end of the week. It’s like Mondays are this huge shock to the system, and then Thursday rolls around and I’m just scraping by what I can to get through Friday. Past jobs had me working inconsistent hours, so it always felt like I got some sort of a break between day and night shifts. There’s also the fact that I pulled a couple 10-11 hour work days this week :\

But those long work days mean I get Friday afternoon off! As soon as the clock strikes twelve, I’m hightailing it outta there to head home for the weekend :D

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I had a well-needed breakfast in bed to start my day.

IMG_3072

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • one whole egg whisked in
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 tbsp granola

IMG_3076
This is definitely one of my favourite oatmeal combos at the moment. I’m lovin’ the molasses lately, and the granola adds an awesome texture to the creamy bowl.

Work eats!

IMG_3085
Homemade protein bar.  I’m going to create a recipe page for these when I get a spare second (if such a thing ever happens…)

My attempt to curb my chewing gum addiction…

IMG_3080
It kinda helped. But it was no Trident Splash in orange creamsicle

Lunch!

IMG_3077
Mega turkey n’ hummus pita with an Asian pear. These pears are interesting. Definitely taste like a pear, but they are super crispy. Way crunchier than any apple I’ve ever had. Which is strange, because Bartlett pears basically melt in your mouth

New tupperware!

I finally made the splurge. I feel so fancy not eating out of old cottage cheese containers now. Speaking of which, this was cottage cheese and grapes.

Totally had hopes of making it to spin class after work. Totally bailed because I just cannot for the life of me drag myself to the gym after work. As I was leaving, I said to a co-worker that I rather get up at 5:30am to work out because I’m more awake then than I am at 4:30pm :\

Besides, I was hungry! My belly wanted a meal!

IMG_3092

  • romaine lettuce
  • spinach
  • tomatoes
  • onions
  • olives
  • pickles
  • tofu
  • feta cheese
  • balsamic vinaigrette (I spell that word wrong every time)

IMG_3099
The olives, pickles and feta made this a particularly vinegar-y and salty salad. I loved it :) What is up with me lately? I used to hate those flavours!

Dessert was the usual nibbles of chocolate.

Did you know Cadbury Mini Eggs are available year round now?? So exciting!!

So I’ve been fielding a few questions lately about the mega life changes that have happened over the past 2-3 weeks. One, how I am doing post break-up, and two, how I am liking the new job.

First, I really, really am a-okay. I’m as busy as ever, and haven’t had much time to dwell on it. Sometimes I get hit with waves of sadness, but it’s not overwhelming. More like a “gee whiz, that really sucks.” Out of respect for the other person involved, I refuse to go into the details of why the break-up happened over the blog. But it’s obvious that a lot has changed in my life since graduating university last spring. I need to move in a certain direction, and I want to do that alone. I promise you, I am the happiest I have been in a long time :)

Secondly, the new job. Erm, I kinda love it!! I love it in a “I can do this everyday happily until April 30th” kind of way. It has all the elements of journalism I liked – the writing, meeting people, fast pace and always a different variety of work. The only thing I don’t enjoy is the hours.

With that said, my passion still lies in health and fitness. While I enjoy fiddling away on my projects all day, I have different dreams for myself. I can’t for sure say I wouldn’t take another job at the university if offered, but I would have to find a way to work fitness into my career somehow. Whether that be taking on projects with the fitness centre, training on the side, or finding ways to do freelance writing.

I also still need to break free of this city at some point. I just can’t seem to get out of here! :P

So that’s that! Next time you “see” me I’ll be at my mom’s place! Hopefully for a fun Flashback Friday, if technology works on my side…

Question of the Day: What’s one thing you used to hate to eat but now love? I think this question gets asked a lot – but it’s fun! Pickles and mustard are two things I couldn’t stand. I also used to dislike mushrooms and oatmeal!! I think I was just cooking them wrong ;)

  1. Oooh! You and I are on the same wavelength! I am having a big old salad for dinner too! :D

I am really glad you are happy! Really really!

  2. I used to hate beets as a child. Being a true little girl, I wanted to like them-because they’re pink!

I tried them again a few years ago, and they really are quite good. Interesting how taste buds change.

  3. used to HATE broccoli.. now i crave it!!
    love your salad!
so glad things are falling into place girl :) happy to hear it!

  4. I used to hate bananas! But now I eat one every morning.

I’m glad to hear that you are okay.

    Great eats!

  5. You know what’s funny? I used to be the same way about BOTH oatmeal and mushrooms haha.
I’m glad to hear you like your new job and are staying busy/happy post break up :)

  6. mmmmm… I love the greek style salad too, but now I totally want one of those pears!!! O love the flavor of pear but hate how soft they have to be to get the good flavor… thanks for the tip!

  7. Susan- that suweet new camera is taking drool-worthy oatmeal photos! :-)

You and I must both be morning people as I’m totally on the same page- my energy starts high and then tanks as each minute passes in the day. Working out in the PM? really unlikely. I’ve done it a few times (like counting on one or two hands) but boy it’s TOUGH!!

I don’t think I know when your bday is- you must be aquarius?

I used to HAVE olives and now I heart them.

Have a wonderful time at home!

    • Yes! I’m an Aquarius :D Apparently I’m the wild child of the zodiac, which means everyone else must be pretty damn boring :P I was actually wondering if you’re a Capricorn… or just on the cusp?

  8. Olives. I HATED them and now I eat the big green ones stuffed with garlic straight outta the jar. nom!!

Glad to hear things are going well. I know it’s hard to give all the real deets on the bloggie!

  9. I am so glad you are in a good place and loving your job :) I just love reading about people who are content in what they do. It gives me hope for my future job :)

Oh, and no worries about the waffle teasing…I went out and bought a wholegrain pancake mix today! Guess what I’m having for brekkie tomorrow?! ;)

  10. welcome to the thursday run-down feeling. sigh. i know it all too well! you’ve been working SO hard, i am proud of you :) molasses in oats sounds so fancy. great idea. OMG! i tried my first asian pear last night! hah. same wavelength for sure. marshall even said “it’s just like an apple!” how funny. SO glad to hear that you’re the happiest youve been in a long time. that makes me happy. AHHH it is almost your BEEDAY! yayer! what are you doing for FBF? something bday related i hope?

oh man. foods i used to hate: mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, mustard.. still hate hot dogs and raisins the last time i checked.

i just love you to the moon and back, susan!

  11. I used to hate avocado (the horror!), peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I DESPISED onions! Now I love them all!

    xo
    Kris

  12. While I enjoy fiddling away on my projects all day, I have different dreams for myself. = GOOD!

You’re ok. I never thought you weren’t. People sometimes like to “make sure you’re ok” almost to stir the pot a bit rather than to really check in on you. I really know you’re ok, which is why i dont feel the need to “make sure” and you never have to justify your ok-ness to the b’sphere. :) but yeah, i hear ya.

the tofu in your salad looks awesome and i cant eat it. soy gets me itching among other nasty’s. And the granola bar. i just made another batch of my version. Good stuff.

    xoox

  13. I’m glad you are in a good place now. Are you still doing the PT training?

I used to hate cream cheese and sour cream when I was little, can you imagine?? I also thought I hated brussel sprouts. Funny how you can be convinced that you hate something you never tried!

    Have a safe trip!

  14. erintakescontrol

Oh, I’ll have to try one of those Asian pears! I despise mushy apples / fruit…they just seem so wrong! I love CRISP apples, so I MUST try one of these pears. I used to hate: mushrooms, oatmeal, and tomatoes. Now, I enjoy all 3 to some extent! Can’t say I’m in love with them, but I will eat them.

  15. That post definitely should have had a warning! It was like Waffle porn!
How bad is your gum habit? I can go through at least 1 pack a day when I work! Is your habit that bad?

I can’t think of anything that I HATED to eat, but I definitely didn’t seek out fresh veggies like I do now. I also did not have the serious addiction to popcorn that I have developed!

    • Depends on how big the pack is :P I can easily chew 10 pieces a day. At the office is the worst because I get antsy sitting at my desk. For some reason sipping liquids doesn’t help – I want to chew! (and then my jaw hurts)

  16. I’m so glad you are doing well, and liking the job!

    I used to hate mustard

  17. Aw, Susan, I’m so glad that despite the major “setbacks”, you’re in a happier place right now. I send hugs and love to you, girl! I know greater things are to come.

I used to hate broccoli. Seriously, I puked after eating them, it was so nasty. Now, they’re my fave vegetable. Go figure!

  18. Ah, Susuan! It’s been way too long since I’ve caught up with you! Thanks so much for your waffle porn the other day. Yum o. Especially the peaches. Now I have to kill myself waiting for summer to try that one :) I used to hate oatmeal, too. My mom always made it so runny and gross. But now that Ive figured out how to cook ito n my own,it’s SOOO much better! Usually I have friday’s off, but today I’m working. Ugh!! Majorly jealous that you get to bounce at noon! xoxo

  19. Sounds like you are ready for a new city/town…and dare I say it…a new province?

    But I am not you,just sayin’ ! ;)

  20. I am glad you are doing “okay” under the circumstances. Being busy can be a good thing…especially if you are having fun. Though I hope you get to relax big time this weekend!

Foods I used to hate that I now love…brussel sprouts, cheese, coffee, tuna, beans (I still find the texture of straight up chickpeas kind of odd?). OH! And chocolate! Hated it growing up.

  21. cadbury eggs are available all year?! This could be dangerous for me…. :)

  22. Asian pears are my absolute favorite! I love them so much!

Foods I used to hate but now love: brussel sprouts. I’d only tried them steamed and plain. Right now I’m working hard on liking olives. I’ve been throwing some kalamatas into my salads. So far so good.

  23. 10-11 hours?! Geez! So happy you get Friday off!! I’m not a big sweets girl but those Cadbury mini eggs are out of control – between the crunchy shell and smooth chocolate, I die. I’m happy to hear that you’re feeling so great about life – it’s much happier being positive than negative isn’t it?! I hope you enjoy your Friday :)

  24. Yaa eggs in the oatmeal!!

  25. I used to hate cottage cheese and now I eat it more than once a day! It’s funny how our tastebuds change!

And I just finished eating my breakfast in bed. It was heavenly!

  26. oh girl…you are preaching to the choir! i know the EXACT state you are in right now. feeling good post-break-up because you are doing something for YOU, working at a job because it pays but still keeping those passions in your vision. i love it. i think you are in a tremendous place and i agree – ya definitely gotta head to a new city and explore!

    so much love to you!

i used to HATE mac n’ cheese. weird, i know. i like it now. also, i used to despise seafood but i am getting better at that one too!

  27. I was never a big fan of beets, but recently I can’t get enough!

  28. Look forward to your recipe page! I never used to like any vegetables like none but know thats all I eat pretty much, I can’t imagine a life without veg! x x

  29. its good to hear you so positive about such big changes. sometimes they are hard, and sad, but necessary! i’ve been there for sure.

ive definitely loved, hated, then reloved foods…like bananas and yogurt!

  30. LOVE your blog! First time over here! Sorry to hear about your recent break-up, but glad to hear that you’re doing well! Relationship can be so traumatic, and I mean that truly and sincerely as silly as it sounds! I’m glad you love your job — so important! While I LOVE my job, I feel the same way come Thursday…just scraping by to get through the week. Next week is my last M-F week and then I’m going to 4-10′s. Not sure how I feel about it as my weekdays are already spread so thin, but we’ll give it a go! I can’t wait to read more! You’re definitely a blog I want to follow! Have a great weekend!

  31. I have been struggling to find my groove with workouts at school. Even though my schedule isn’t jam packed, it is a little wack- but reading your blog always puts things into perspective. I’ll be aye okay. As are you! So happy to hear that the new job is suiting you well.It makes me happy that you got a birthday office party and that you have a group of office girlfriends to chat with. :) The little things.
