Flashback Friday – A Trip Down Musical Memory Lane
Hi everyone! Thank you sooo much for all the kind comments on my last post regarding my car accident. I try not to ramble like that too much on my blog, but when I sat down to write, I just ended up regurgitating all those feelings! Luckily, my car is barely scratched, there’s just a huge dent in the Mazda I backed into. The owner stopped by last night and he is super nice. He said he was just glad I left my phone number!
I also want to add that I loved reading all the little things that brought you joy today and yesterday! I’d say that is one of my most asked question-of-the-days, and with reason! They all bring me a little bit of joy too :)
You know what brought me my daily joy today? Spin class! I was up and at ‘em at 5:30 to make it to my 6am RPM class. Totally worth getting out of bed for. Hands down, my favourite part of the class is our final song which is always a “mountain climb.” I’m always wiped by that point in the class, and the 7-ish minute song has increasing intensity throughout. Just as I feel like I’m going to die, our instructor yells at us to dig deep and sprint the last 30 seconds. I always give it everything I have and finish the class feeling a huge sense of satisfaction :)
The second I hopped off my spin bike, all I could think about were the PB&J oats I planned on making the second I burst through my door.
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 scoop vanilla whey powder
- cinnamon
- peanut butter
- blackberry jam
I “sandwiched” half the PB&J in the center again.
Kinda like an oatmeal sandwich :) Yum!
Packed an old-school turkey sandwich for lunch today.
Roast turkey meat, mayo, mustard, pepper, onion, tomato and lettuce. It’s an “old standby” for a reason – delicious!
And what’s a day in Susan World without an apple?
I’ve been enjoying the local McIntosh apples lately. Strange, because I never used to like them. They’re a really soft apple, and I typically like crisp and crunchy. Oh well, I’ve got a bag of honeycrisp in the fridge that are now calling my name :)
I felt like “dipping” for dinner, so I threw together a snacky-type meal.
Pita bread, mushrooms, carrots, bell pepper.
Sabra hummus, the last of mom’s taco dip and salsa.
There was a lot of cross-dippage going on.

I couldn’t finish it all, buuuuut I did have room for some Halloween candy I snuck back from my mom’s ;)
Is it true Oh Henry! bars are only available in Canada?
These, along with Reese’s and Mr. Big are probably my favourite chocolate bars.
Okay, I just love anything with chocolate and peanuts. Or, in this case, chocolate, peanuts, caramel and fudge.
Now it’s time for Flashback Friday!! Yayyyyy!
If you recall, I made it one of my November Goals to start playing guitar again. If you can believe it, I haven’t touched the thing in seven months. I believe that’s some sort of record for me. My parents put me in piano lessons when I was five years old, which I did up until the age of 12. I hated them at the time, but in retrospect will admit they were very valuable.
I got my first electric guitar (a gorgeous navy blue Squire Strat) for my 14th birthday and taught myself how to play on that. During high school, I played in a handful of punk rock bands, including an all-girls band called The Brats and another called The Dickie Dees.
I was surprised one Christmas in high school with a Seagull acoustic. It’s a beautiful guitar, with a very unique sound. I then fell in love with all things acoustic. I started teaching myself to play harmonica, drums and even took voice lessons. I used to play a lot, just me and my acoustic, in various coffee shops around town. It was always incredibly nerve wracking for me, but I always got good feedback from people which was encouraging.
I met two musicians in my university’s journalism program who sort of adopted me into their music group. First, we formed a band called the Billygoat Collective (lead guy was named Billy). I played bass and had a blast doing it. I loved being the bass chick in the band, and I think I fit the laid-back bassist attitude to a tee ;)
Then we got a few more members, including a saxophonist, and became The Station Agents. I took on the role as keyboardist and we recorded an album last winter.
Me and my fellow J-Schoolers continued to play as an acoustic trio. You can watch us doing a White Stripes cover in bad sound and video quality here.
Awww, that was a fun trip down musical memory lane! Think I’ll go pick up my guitar right now and play a song before I go to bed. It used to be such a wonderful outlet for me. I think it’s time I start using it as creative therapy again :)
Question of the day: Do you play any instruments?

Oh Henry bars are here in the US. I’ve had them before. Mars company??
How cool on the musician! I actually have a bachelors and masters in music performance (french horn), and I did 3 years into a doctorate. Long story short, I don’t play anymore.
I have been teaching myself guitar, though!
My husband is a composer and played tuba/trombone. We met in graduate school by being thrown together in a brass quintet :D
Aww, that is so cute, I didn’t know that’s how you guys met! Just checked – Oh Henry is Hershey’s in Canada, and Nestle in the States. I’m relieved everyone has access to its tastiness :)
Oatmeal sandwich…I like it. I may steal it. I’ve never seen an Oh Henry! bar, but it looks good!
I don’t pla an instrument, but I’d love to learn piano. It looks so cool.
that oatmeal sandwich look NOM-some. sheesh! i should have thought of that!
i used to play piano for 4 years, clarinet for 9. i studied hard at clarinet- i have 2!
That’s awesome! I wish I was musically talented. I took piano lessons until I was about 12 also… I was good. But I didn’t love it.
Great FBF Pics! I can play saxophone, piano, and do yoga. Those are my talents :)
And the Jelly in the oats. With PB. I mean it’s not rocket science but gosh girl, you really made that loooookkkkkk awewwwwsommmme!!!!
Gosh you’re so talented playing all those instruments Susan!!
I used to play piano for several yrs but quit in 7th grade. Played flute (not well) for a year or so, violin (not well) when I was litle. Nothing now. Kinda sad really!
thanks for your sweet comments on the posts today…and I feel rather stupid about getting the b-fast cookie all goofed up! Thanks for the info- I’ll nail it one of these days!! :-)
D
I played the flute and piano when I was young. But, I took vocal lessons from age 8 to age 18 off and on. I loved it. I competed. I sang at wedding and funerals lol. I made money singing at the weddings which was encouraging. But, then I got busy with life and realized that a lot of other people could sing just as well as I could. I am very much out of practice now but I still miss the experience of performing
I didn’t know you played guitar! That is so awesome! My dad plays and whenever I see someone playing I always think of him :)
I played piano when I was young but I stopped in high school. I wish I would have kept up with it because now I can hardly play a note!
I also took voice lessons for a long time and sand ALL the time when I was little, but my mom says one day I woke up and didn’t sing, and that was the end of it!
Never heard of an Oh Henry, but I think we need to get acquainted!
I wish I could play an instrument but I’m not very coordinated so its never worked out. Although, I have good rhythm so drums wouldn’t be a bad option.
I have some friends who know guitar but haven’t played much lately either. I think it’s a great thing to know how to do – you can entertain a whole room with an acoustic guitar and songs everyone knows. And there’s nothing quite like listening to guitar around a campfire.
It’s always hard to keep up with artistic endeavours, but it’s also always worth it, so good luck.
I’m really loving that pb and j sandwich oatmeal.. that’s such a good idea!
That’s so neat you know how to play guitar! I’m not very musically talented! haha.
And my gym just launched the BodyPump classes so they don’t have the Bodyflow.. hopefully they’ll get it soon!
You know, I haven’t SEEN an O Henry bar in a while, but I think they do make them here because my mom always liked them.
Susan, you are too coooooool! You look so awesome playing your guitar/bass. I really hope you get into it again!
THanks so much for your sweet comment n my post yesterday, too. It totally made my morning when I read it :) xoxo
#1- love your dinner dippage plate :)
k, music. That is so cool! I had no idea you were in a band and played solo- I started harp when I was six (recorder and keyboard before then) but kind of gave it up when I was 12 and first went into hospital. The last couple of years before quitting, I did a lot of touring, was performing a few times a week and did a couple of recordings. Fun times for the most part, but kind of just wanted to be a regular 12 year old. My mom brought my harp over on Thursday so I can start playing again…for FUN this time!
I need to try PBJ oats! I love the way you eat yours because that’s how I eat mine – save the bite with the most toppings for last.
That dippable meal looks absolutely delicious!! That is so cool about your musical past! I don’t think I ever knew that. I used to play the clarinet back in the day (for YEARS).
Love this theme! I’m really big on music (it was my first love! sorry foodism..)
I love singing and playing piano (but only as an accompaniment, I’m not that good) and I’ve been trying to teach myself to play the guitar but that goddamn F-chord has been ticking me off! It’s impossible to play – I swear!!!
But I LOVE LOVE LOVE music!
xxx
I love the flashback pics! I used to play the flute in Jr. High. Not very well though. My husband is a very good guitar player and my daughter is learning but she’s a bit lazy and doesn’t practice much!
oh i am so glad i saw this! i LOVE the FBF!! you are so talented :) i love the look of you on stage!! and i love your snack plate! oh how i have missed you <3
